Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or haven't stepped foot in a gym in years, starting something new—especially when it involves flying through the air—can be a little intimidating.
As a studio owner right here in Concord, NC, I hear the same questions every week. Let’s break down everything you need to know about starting your bungee journey.
What Exactly is Bungee Fitness?
Bungee fitness is a high-intensity, full-body workout where you are strapped into a harness attached to a ceiling-mounted bungee cord. Think of it as a mix of cardio, strength training, and dance, all with a heavy dose of gravity-defying fun.
The bungee provides resistance (making you work harder to move away from your anchor) and assistance (helping you power through movements like burpees or squats that might normally feel impossible).
Is it Good for Beginners?
Yes! In fact, bungee is one of the most beginner-friendly workouts out there. Because the bungee cord carries a portion of your body weight, it is incredibly low-impact.
Joint Friendly: If you have "cranky" knees or back issues, bungee takes the pressure off your joints while still giving you a sweat-inducing workout.
Scalable: You don’t need to be an athlete to start. Most studios (ours included!) offer "Intro" or "Level 1" classes specifically designed to teach you the basics of harness safety and movement.
Common Questions (The "Real Talk" Version)
1. "How should the harness feel?"
We call it the "Bungee Hug," but it shouldn't feel like a squeeze! While the harness needs to be secure, we actually encourage you not to make it too tight. Think of it this way: when you sink into a deep squat or a lunge, your muscles naturally expand. If the harness starts off too tight, you won’t have any room to move! When we fit you, we look for just enough "breathing room" to slide your hand comfortably between your body and the straps. This ensures that, mid-workout, you can move, breathe, and fly without feeling restricted.
Pro Tip: Wear high-waisted, thick leggings to provide extra padding.
2. "Is there a weight limit?"
Yes. For safety and equipment integrity, most bungee systems have weight requirements—usually ranging from 90 lbs to 230 lbs (though this varies by studio). This ensures the bungee has the right amount of tension to support you safely.
3. "What should I wear?"
Leggings are a must. Avoid shorts, as the harness can chafe bare skin.
Supportive sneakers. You’ll be doing plenty of running and jumping.
A fitted top that covers the waist. Since you might be leaning forward or occasionally going upside down, a loose shirt can end up over your head!
4. "What if I’m not coordinated?"
Don't worry! Everyone feels a little like a baby giraffe during their first class. The bungee moves with you, and our instructors are trained to guide you through every "hop, step, and fly" at a pace that feels comfortable.
What to Expect in Your First Class
The Weigh-In: Most studios will ask for your height and weight before class. This isn't about judgment—it's about math! We need to know exactly what bungee to hook to your harness so you get the perfect amount of lift.
The Hook-Up: Your instructor will help you into your harness and clip you in.
The Basics: You’ll learn the "Base Position" and how to trust the cord by leaning your weight into it.
The Fun: By the end of class, you’ll likely be doing "flying" lunges or soaring across the room.
